Skip Hire Guide – What You Need to Know

Choosing the Right Skip Size

When hiring a skip, think about what you’re disposing of and how much waste you have.

We offer a wide range of skip sizes. Visit our sizes page to see real-world comparisons rather than just measurements. A useful guide is to estimate how many black bin bags your waste would fill — but remember, this is only a rough guide and will vary depending on the type of waste.

If in doubt, we recommend going slightly larger to avoid the cost of hiring a second skip.

What Can You Put in a Skip?

You can dispose of most general household and commercial waste in a skip.

However, some items are restricted or charged separately.

Additional Charges

  • Mattresses: £25 + VAT each

  • Upholstered seating: As upholstered seating items incur additional disposal charges due to current waste regulations. Please contact our team for further information and pricing.

Prohibited Items

The following cannot be placed in general waste skips:

  • Electrical items
  • Asbestos (we offer a specialist service)
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Batteries
  • Tyres
  • Pressurised containers
  • Paint or varnish tins

Loading Your Skip

  • Skips must be filled level with the top (legal requirement)
  • Overfilled skips cannot be collected
  • Do not use boards or extensions to increase height

To maximise space:

  • Break down bulky items where possible
  • Load evenly and efficiently

Skip Placement & Permits

The best place for your skip is on private property, ensuring:

  • Safe access for delivery vehicles
  • A practical location for loading

If placing a skip on a public road or verge, a council permit is required.

  • Permits can take up to 10 working days
  • Costs and timeframes vary by council
  • We can advise and assist with the process
